CR’s pick of exhibitions, design events and creative activities for the week ahead including the London Illustration Fair, 25 Years of Pixar in Paris, Noma Bar in London, Thread creative workshop and talk in Bristol, the Barbican Design Market, Hamish Muir’s Octavo talk in London, and the Illustration Cupboard’s Winter Exhibition …


The London Illustration Fair
Hoxton Arches, London
Fri 29 Nov – Sun 1 Dec

An artist-led illustration, print and design fair. Work includes original pieces from twenty emerging artists, who were selected by judging panel of industry figures, including Print Club London’s Rose Stallard, Jealous Gallery director Dario Illari, artist Ben Levy, Hang-Up Gallery director Ben Cotton and artist Mark Powell. Puck present a revolving drawing installation, alongside new prints and artwork from the collective. Collaborative live work comes from Jealous screen print studio and gallery, and Linocut Boy (aka Nick Morley) will be running a Christmas card printing workshop.


Pixar, 25 Years of Animation
Art Ludique, Paris

Art Ludique, a new museum dedicated to ‘the art of entertainment’, opens its doors this month with the exhibiton Pixar, 25 Years of Animation, including new selections from the archive and updated exhibits from recent films (since the exhibition was at MoMA, New York, in 2006, and subsequent tour). Hundreds of hand-drawn designs, paintings, sketches, models and sculptures provide a behind-the-scenes look at some of the most well-known animated films in recent history. The museum also holds a permanent collection from artists working in comics, manga, cinema, animation and video games.


Noma Bar: Cut the Conflict
Rook & Raven, London

Exhibition of work from the Israeli graphic designer using different materials donated by people in countries where there is conflict. A talk and demo from Bar will take place on 30 November and 7 December (12-4pm).To read more about this exhibition on the blog, click here.



Thread: From Humble Beginnings
The Royal Navy Volunteer, Bristol

The first in a series of quarterly events, inviting the creative community of the South West to come together for a variety of talks and workshops, as a platform to meet, chat and share ideas. Speakers this time include Taxi Studio co-founder Spencer Buck and creative director and designer John McFaul of McFaul Studio, plus goodie bags for attendees come from Moleskine and White Duck Screen Print.


Barbican Design Market
Barbican Centre, London

This pop-up market will fill the foyers of the arts centre for four weeks for a fresh alternative to high street Christmas shopping, with over 35 stalls, changing daily, offering design-led gifts for sale from independent designers, makers and artisans.


Hamish Muir, Octavo: More Madness Than Manifesto
JWT building, London
Wed 28 Nov

Talk from co-founder of design studio 8vo, publishers of the Octavo typography journal. Muir will discuss the project in the context of the British design industry in the 80s, presenting mock-ups and other ephemera from the journal’s history.


Illustration Cupboard’s Annual Winter Exhibition
Illustration Cupboard, London
Until Fri 31 Jan

A variety of work from much-loved children’s stories, film and graphic novels, political cartoons, alongside other contemporary illustrations will be on show at the gallery’s winter exhibition. Look out for E H Shepard’s original Winnie the Pooh drawings, paintings from Axel ‘The Gruffalo’ Scheffler and Quentin Blake, and a silkscreen print from Judith Kerr’s The Tiger Who Came to Tea.
